Adelaide-born winemaker Larry McKenna went to Martinborough in the 1980s to help start Martinborough Vineyards. At that time the region was just starting out, long before Otago even had vines. About 20 years ago, armed with knowledge and experience of this beautiful region, he started his own venture, Escarpment.
GRIS is part of his entry level range of pinot family varietals: GRIS, NOIR and BLANC. The style is definitely nodding to Alsace, which is to be expected given the similarities in climate and temperature. So where your typical grigio has brighter acidity but not a lot of fruit richness, this has more weight and concentration from the extra week or three on the vine. A great example of New World gris, and really tremendous value.
